Meditation Is Not What You Think (That's the Point)
24 September 2026
Quick confession: for my first year of meditating, I thought I was terrible at it.
Because every time I sat down, my brain turned into a group chat at 2 a.m. — grocery lists, that embarrassing thing I said in 2014, why is my knee doing that? I figured meditation meant emptying my mind, and mine refused to be emptied. So clearly, I was failing.
Plot twist: nobody's mind empties. Not the monks'. Not yours. Not mine.
Here's what's actually happening. From the day we're born, we take pictures of everything — every memory, every worry, every awkward moment — and stack them in our minds. The method doesn't ask you to organize the album or argue with any single photo. It asks you to take one honest, wide-angle look at the whole stack — how you've actually been living — and then throw it out.
The practice is embarrassingly simple:
- Sit down.
- Reflect — look back at how you've lived, honestly, from the big picture. The stress, the habits, the reruns.
- Discard — don't analyze it, don't negotiate with it. Let it go, the method's way.
That's it. No wrestling your thoughts into silence. My brain still isn't a still pond — more like a pond with a very loud frog. But I stopped negotiating with the frog, and life got a lot quieter. 🍃
So if you've been putting off meditation because your mind is "too busy" — good news. Busy minds are exactly the ones it helps. You're not behind; you're the ideal candidate.
